Bahama Mama…

I just got back from a wonderful and relaxing Caribbean vacation from the Bahamas, Grand Bahama Island. The resort food and drinks were not even worth mentioning, but thankfully we decided to venture out one sunny afternoon to try some traditional island food. We read about Bertha’s Blue Dinghy beach bar on Trip Adviser before we left, where she came highly recommended by many reviewers of our hotel. We took the 10 minute walk down the beach, and found her tiny shack uninhabited at nearly 1p.m. Disappointed that we would have to eat the same mediocre resort food for lunch again, we started to turn away. A few seconds later however Big Bertha opened the door and said she was just about to open! After we were seated we asked her if she always opened for lunch this late, to which she replied that she usually opens at 10a.m., but today she had some errands to run. This lady was clearly on island time. We hoped her food was better then her work ethic!

There was no menu, but Bertha asked us if we wanted conch, fish, chicken or lobster. Although we wanted to try all four, we went with the lobster and the fish. All I can say is I LOVE YOU BERTHA! After four days of eating the same blah resort food, this was amazing! Both the lobster and the fish were slathered in a “unknown” Caribbean rub, and were extremely fresh. My guess is that Bertha probably went out and caught them that very morning after her “errands”…

She served both the lobster and the fish with a side of baked potato smothered in a HUGE slab of butter and a simple side salad. She even brought out a Costco size bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. We seriously felt like we were sitting in this nice lady’s kitchen and that we had known her for years. In fact later on in the trip when we talked about this place, we referred to her as our Aunt Bertha. Seriously, I wish we were related because Aunt Bertha can cook! You can tell how much we loved it by the “after” shot below…
