Virgils BBQ
When you arrive at Virgils BBQ in the heart of Times Square, you are quickly seated at a table equipped with burgundy hand towels wrapped around your cutlery instead of the usual linen napkin. That’s the tip-off that this place is going to be a no frills, finger licking good BBQ joint! Virgil’s has huge portions and overall very good food compared to most of the other tourist traps in the area.

We started with the Hush Puppies, served with a side maple syrup butter. It must have been a plate of at least 20 or so, and as good as they were, two people could not get through this humongous portion.

For my main course I got the Kansas City Fried Chicken with sides of Macaroni and Cheese and Collard Greens. The fried chicken was perfect, extra extra crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The mac and cheese was also very good, but I was disappointed in the greens. I wish I had gotten a double side of mac and cheese instead! My friend got the two meat combo of Ribs and Sausage, and the ribs definitely lived up to this famous BBQ joint’s reputation. The sausage on the other hand was a bit strange, it seemed to have bits of potato (or something) chopped up into it. Not your classic “Italian” style sausage we are used to here in New York.

Overall, great food for the area, but if you are really craving some good BBQ/Southern food (as well as Cajun/Creole), I would head down to Acme Bar and Grill in Noho.
